If you’re a fan of supercars, you’ll no doubt be aware that the Geneva Motor Show has been underway this month. For those who haven’t heard of it, here’s the lowdown.
The Geneva Motor Show is one of the most exciting car shows on the planet. It’s the place where the most exciting concept cars are released and you’re likely to see the newest models of the most unavailable but exotic automobiles on the planet showcased.
Held in Geneva, Switzerland, the show is THE place for car manufacturers to make their announcements. It’s open for any motorcar producer (3 or 4 wheels only) and will host around 250 exhibitors from around the world. The latest in design, bodywork and engineering can be seen.
A large number of cars will be exhibited for the first time – their world premiere, along with 12 or so concept cars. To give you an idea, in 2014 146 world and European premieres were expected. That included 5 world premieres from BMW, 6 different Range Rovers and 7 different Volvo cars. However, it’s not just high spec expensive cars that you’ll see at Geneva, you’ll also spot cars such as Seats and Skodas.
Geneva Motor Show History
The Geneva Motor Show has been running since 1905. In addition to showcasing practically all the main internal combustion type cars ever produced, it has also showcased the latest in alternative powered cars such as electric, steam powered and benzene cars since the beginning of the last century.
One important part of the show is the ‘Car of the Year’ contest. The winner was announced on March 3rd this year it was the small family hatchback, the Peugeot 308 who took the trophy.
Of course, there are many super cars who take the spotlight of the event. In addition, there are several prototypes that have all the latest equipment, and that are sometimes born from international partnerships. Attended by the industry movers and shakers in addition to politicians and a handful of celebrities, the media give good coverage to the event.
